Firearms Identification Card & License to Carry

Applicants for a Firearms Identification Card (FID), a License to Carry Firearms (LTC), or a License to Possess a Machine Gun need to complete the application, must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License and show proof of residency. Applicants must be residents or business owners in the City of Springfield. The application can be downloaded below.

New applicants need to present a certificate of completion of a live fire Massachusetts approved gun safety course at the time of application. Check online at www.goal.org or www.NRAinstructors.org to find a certified training program.

Applications for renewal may be submitted by USPS mail:

Alternatively, the applicant can deliver the completed application in person to the Clerk’s Office in the lobby of 130 Pearl Street during regular business hours; or the applicant can deposit the application, at any time, into the drop box (secured lockbox) located in front of the Clerk’s Office window in the lobby of 130 Pearl Street.

Applicants should allow time for the processing of fingerprints and photographs. Applicants should be prepared to pay the $100 non-refundable application fee when the application is submitted. Acceptable types of payment include personal checks or money orders made payable to the City of Springfield. Do not send cash as payment for renewal applications.

Information required to renew your firearms license:
Completed application and affidavit.
Copy of valid Massachusetts driver’s license or state ID (front and back).
Copy of your current LTC.
Copy of a utility bill, rental agreement, or mortgage statement as proof of residency. We require that the bill be in your name.
Copy of birth certificate (US citizen by birth) or a copy of your Passport/Naturalization papers or permanent residency card, whichever is applicable.
Check or money order for $100 made payable to the City of Springfield. We do not accept cash in the lockbox or via USPS mail.

If the required information is not attached to your application, we will return your application and payment to you via USPS mail.

The application is reviewed by the licensing authority of the Springfield Police Department. The License will be delivered to the applicant by USPS mail.
